Challenges

Fortis Living called in ASL to discuss the fact that poor print management was resulting in wasteful printing and the use of out-dated devices with high energy consumption and high running costs. Fortis were aware of the terminology of “managed print services” but were unsure as to how to implement it. Many steps were taken to reduce the environmental impact of printing, including using recycled paper, enforcing duplex printing and introducing company-wide print policies to encourage employees to print responsibly.

Challenges:

Fortis Living called in ASL to discuss the fact that poor print management was resulting in wasteful printing and the use of out-dated devices with high energy consumption and high running costs. Fortis were aware of the terminology of “managed print services” but were unsure as to how to implement it. Many steps were taken to reduce the environmental impact of printing, including using recycled paper, enforcing duplex printing and introducing company-wide print policies to encourage employees to print responsibly.

Soultion

Fortis Living introduced several MFP devices (Multi- Functional Products) to replace stand-alone photocopiers. There are currently 14 such devices in use, incorporatating network printing, faxing and scan to email features. An audit was then carried out and in excess of 40 desktop printers were found to be in use. The next stage was to consolidate the number of devices and where possible reduce the number of printers and encourage use of the new MFP devices which were strategically located throughout their offices. Further assessment was carried out to provide a comprehensive audit of all current devices including location and print volumes.

With the intention of making real savings, 18 new energy efficient desktop printers were installed to complement the 14 MFP devices. We were able to provide data to enable Fortis Living to fulfil their demands on new carbon trading regulations.  A properly managed print environment can go a long way to improving an organisation’s environmental footprint.
