One of the reasons our clients work with us long-term is that we are truly agnostic. We partner with most, if not all, of the best printer and scanner manufacturers in the industry. We do this to ensure we can give our customers the right advice and supply the right equipment to meet their needs.

Epson has cleverly found clear ground to separate itself from its competitors in the development of sustainable printing solutions. In 2022 Epson launched its Heat-Free Technology. Of course, less heat means less energy required. This is a key reason why so many of our clients with tough sustainability goals opt for an Epson.

In this blog, we’ll be looking at Epson’s Heat-Free Technology. What it is, and why you might benefit from Epson’s heat-free printing technology.

Traditional printing depends on heat

Traditionally, high levels of heat have always been used in the laser printing process. The heat fuses the toner to the paper. As the paper passes through the rollers, the roller assembly is heated to over 300 degrees, bonding the toner to the paper. Rollers must be heated uniformly to deliver a high-quality print. Some printer manufacturers have experimented with producing printers with a thin roller. These require less energy to heat to a uniformly high level, but until now, there’s been no escaping the need to use heat to deliver high-quality printing.

Typically, a printer would receive a print job, preheat the fuser, charge the photoreceptor drum, Deliver the laser exposure, Develop, Transfer the toner, Fuse and then print.

With Epson’s Heat-Free Technology, heat is not needed to fuse the toner to the paper. Epson has cleverly distilled the 8 stages of printing down to three. With Epson’s Heat-free technology, the printers literally receive the print job, eject the ink and away it goes. A high-quality printout is delivered into the paper tray.

How Heat-Free Technology is cutting carbon footprints

Energy consumption isn’t the only win that customers get from using Epson’s Heat-Free Technology.

Heat-free printing also delivers faster printing without compromising on print quality. It achieves this by reducing the printing process from 8 steps, down to just 3. Of course, if the printer doesn’t need heating, that’s a whole load of energy use saved right there. There are other environmental and time benefits too.

Other benefits of Heat-Free Printing Technology

Lower ongoing printing costs with reusable ink packs

Where traditional inkjet printers use expensive ink cartridges that require regular replacement, Epson printers use large ink tanks referred to as refillable ink pack systems which offer a low cost per page and, because cartridges need replacement less regularly, reduced downtime is a happy side-effect.

Faster print times

Epson’s Heat-Free Technology also makes printing almost instant – perfect for busy employees. Because there is no need to warm up the roller assembly, printing starts as soon as the printer is switched on. With some traditional printers, the warm-up process can take as much as 15 minutes.

Epson’s heat-free technology also uses refillable ink tanks, rather than disposable cartridges. This means less waste to landfill.
