Paper use in business is declining. In the 2018 survey ‘Managed Print Services Landscape 2018’ by Quocirca, only 44% of businesses said that paper was an important part of their business – a decline of 4% year-on-year.

It’s possible that digitisation has accelerated the shift of businesses to the cloud, reducing the significance of the role of paper within businesses today. However, some of this shift can be attributed to the increasing awareness of the importance of security and the growing cost of a security breach.

The managed print services market is growing. Valued at $27,500 million in 2017 by Allied Market Research, the print services market is projected to reach $59,709 million by 2025, growing at a CAGR of 10.3%.  Quocirca’s report reflects this with 77% of businesses saying they will increase their spend on managed print services in the coming year.

Part of the driver behind this is the need for increased print security. With print data breaches costing around £313,000 (according to Quocirca), businesses are increasingly recognising the importance of data print security.

40% of businesses are already using pull printing to safeguard their data, and it’s expected that more businesses will choose to use pull printing in future over traditional push printing infrastructures.

According to ‘Managed Print Services Landscape 2018’, only 30% of businesses are confident that their print infrastructure is protected from all threats.

In fact, increasing security is the reason that 26% of businesses in the survey have already switched to MPS.

Whilst security is clearly a key player in the decision to move away from on-premise DIY printing infrastructures, it’s clear that the key driver for businesses to switch is still the cost savings that MPS can offer, with 46% of UK businesses switching to MPS predominantly for cost saving reasons.

Interestingly, according to Quocirca’s Print Security Index, 76% of those organisations that already use Managed Print Services are considered to be Print Security Leaders.
